The Groom's Cake- A Chance for Football, Trucks, and...Molecules?

When my step sister, Liz, described her plans for a beautiful, beachside, La Jolla wedding, I got super excited, picturing something straight out of an Athropology catalogue. With all the flowers and lace, Liz wanted something for her groom-to-be, Tedman, so she asked me to make a groom's cake. Originating in the South (like Tedman), a groom's cake might have traditionally been cheesecake and is seen as a gift from the bride to the groom.  The tradition has made a comeback, and has recently evolved into a way to bring the groom's personality into the wedding. So of course Liz asked me to design a cake involving Tedman's favorite sports team....actually, no....she knew way into this groom's heart would be chocolate and... Computational Chemistry!
Needless to say, I was a little intimidated when Liz told me Tedman's PHD focus, and the requested theme of his cake. So with my limited knowledge on the subject, I designed a masterpiece involving computers, codes and Google. Thank goodness for Tedman's sisters, who performed the most epic rehearsal dinner toast I have witnessed to date while wearing lab coats and assembling the "Ted" and "Liz" molecules, I was set straight about the elements involved in his love for science. So yes, the night before the wedding, and with the help of my step dad, I completely redesigned the cake and scrapped the computer I had built out of fondant. The inspired cake ended up involving 2 nerd (no pun intended Ted) candy filled test tubes, one for Liz, one for Tedman, spilling out to make a heart, and topped with a bride and groom molecule. Lastly, but not least, were the classically designed cake pops, around one for each guest. What a fun project! Congrats Tedman and Liz on your beautiful wedding and future together!

A Fair Farewell for a Going Away Party

One of my best friends Bethany, and her husband Mike found out only weeks ago that they would be moving to California when he accepted an awesome new job opportunity. I was planning the design of her birthday cake when I found out, thinking the next celebration would be for her 28th. Little did I know, we would be gathering people the following weekend to celebrate our friends Mike and Bethany before their move. I refused to call it a "going away party" although that is the blog title, instead we called it a "farewell party for their extended California stay". Bethany's planned purse birthday cake became a Louis Vuitton luggage cake, and of course it was Bethany's fave- red velvet. Although there are no great pictures of the cake in existence, it was mistaken by a few for the real thing. So happy we got to celebrate Mike and Bethany while they were here....and of course I have not given up on us living in the same state someday again. Here's to Mike and Bethany!

A Two Two Train Cake!

I stole this creative blog title from my friend Megan, who hosted a train themed birthday party for her now toddler Evan! The party was complete with railroad signs, a giant train set as a birthday gift, and a birthday boy dressed as a conductor. So Megan asked me to make a cake to suit the occasion. She had the idea of making the train tracks 2-shaped, and we were able to use cupcakes for ease of serving while still having the decorated tiny train cakes. The cargo was none other than jelly beans and animal crackers and I'm pretty sure it was a party on the train as well as around it! Loved making this cake, but even better was seeing Evan's face and hearing him repeat "train cake!" and he saw it. Pure cuteness! Happy 2nd birthday Evan!

An Extra Helping for Help 4 Kids!

I have been thinking about ways I can use my business to help others, and aside from helping people to love cake, I have planned on finding ways to use my business to help meet the needs of others. This could be emotional needs, spiritual needs, or physical needs. So when my aunt Ivana mentioned she was hosting a purse party to benefit the organization where she works, Help 4 Kids International, it was a perfect fit for my plans of using my cakes for a good cause. Especially since the organization brings healthcare, food, and support in many other ways to children living in extreme poverty. With Ivana's ideas, we designed the purse cake, highlighting Africa, and the country where Help 4 Kids International is very active- Uganda. I was so glad to hear the purse party was a hit and a ton of fun! Best of luck to Help 4 Kids International!
